Not every paint brush handles the same job. The shape determines how it holds paint, where it reaches, and how much control you have during application. Here are the main types and where each one works.
- Angled sash brushes are the go-to choice for cutting in around edges, windows, and where walls meet ceilings. A 2.5-inch to 3-inch angled paint brush gives you a firm edge for guiding straight lines along trim and door paint borders. Angled paint brushes also handle tight corners and intricate details on moldings and window frames with precision that flat brushes cannot match.
- Flat brushes cover large, flat surfaces quickly and hold more paint per load than angled styles. Use a 3-inch or 4-inch flat brush for broad wall sections, fences, and siding where speed matters more than fine detail. Flat paint brushes are ideal for exterior projects and for laying down even coats of stain or primer on wide, uninterrupted areas.
- Wall brushes run 4 inches or wider and are built for large wall and ceiling surfaces. They carry a lot of paint and distribute it evenly in fewer passes. A wall brush pairs well with a roller for cutting in corners before rolling the rest of the surface.
- Oval ferrule brushes are highly favored for home projects and fine arts because their thicker profile holds a larger paint reservoir, allowing for smoother coverage and longer continuous strokes. The unique contoured shape of an oval ferrule also conforms excellently to profile surfaces like trim, spindles, and moldings, requiring fewer passes than traditional flat options.
Choosing the Right Paintbrush Bristles
Bristle material determines how a paint brush performs with different coatings, so matching bristles to your paint type is not optional.
- Synthetic bristles (nylon, polyester, or nylon-polyester blends) work with all types of coatings, including latex, acrylic, and waterborne formulas. Synthetic brushes do not absorb moisture, so they maintain their shape and stiffness through long application sessions. A nylon-polyester blend offers maximum versatility: nylon adds flexibility and a smooth release, while polyester provides stiffness and durability in warm conditions.
- Natural bristles (hog hair, ox hair, or china bristle) are reserved for oil-based paints, stains, and solvent-based coatings. Natural bristle brushes absorb water and go limp with water-based paint, which is why professionals avoid them for latex projects. For oil-based work on furniture, cabinets, or exterior stains, a natural bristle brush delivers a smooth, even finish.
- Stiff filaments provide crisp lines for cutting in, making them ideal for edging work. Soft filaments leave fewer brush marks on smooth surfaces, which matters when applying a waterborne alkyd finish like ADVANCE® Waterborne Interior Alkyd Paint on doors and trim. Pair an ADVANCE® Satin Finish 792 with a quality synthetic brush for a factory-smooth result.
Paint Brush Sizes and When to Use Each
Paintbrush sizes commonly range from 1 inch to 4 inches, and each size fills a specific role in a painting project.
- 1-inch to 1.5-inch brushes handle touch-ups, narrow trim, and small detail work where control matters most. Use a smaller brush for maximum precision on window mullions and tight corners.
- 2-inch brushes suit cutting in on standard walls, painting door edges, and working around outlets and switches. A firm-to-medium stiffness brush at this size guides a straight line easily.
- 2.5-inch to 3-inch angled sash brushes are the workhorse for most wall painting projects. This is the size professional painters use for cutting in around ceilings, corners, and trim before rolling the main surface.
- 4-inch and wider brushes cover large flat areas, fences, decks, and exterior siding. These sizes hold a lot of paint and move quickly over broad surfaces.
Loading the brush correctly makes a difference at every size. Dip only the lower third of the bristles into the paint, tap gently against the side of the can, and apply with smooth, even strokes. To smooth out brush marks, drag the clean tips of the brush lightly over the freshly painted area in one direction.
How to Clean and Store Paint Brushes
A quality paint brush used on many projects over the years is a better investment than buying disposable brushes for every job. Proper cleaning and storage extend brush life significantly.
For water-based paints, rinse the brush under warm running water immediately after use. Work the bristles with your hand to release paint trapped near the ferrule (metal area). A brush comb helps remove dried paint from deep in the bristle pack. For oil-based coatings and stains, clean with mineral spirits or the solvent recommended on the product label.
After cleaning, reshape the bristles by hand and store the brush flat or hang it with the bristles pointing down. Never leave a paint brush standing on its bristles, as this permanently bends the tips and ruins the brush's edge.
