Common Sandpaper Grit Ranges and Uses
Extra-Coarse (24–36): Heavy stripping, rough shaping, and aggressive material removal.
Coarse (40–60): Removing old finishes, paint, or deep scratches.
Medium (80–120): General sanding, smoothing wood, and removing surface imperfections.
Fine (150–180): Final sanding before applying stain, paint, or varnish.
Very Fine (220–240): Sanding between coats of paint or varnish, and light finishing.
Extra Fine (320–400): High-quality finishing and polishing.
Super Fine (600+): Polishing, buffing, and finishing metal or plastics.
